Southern Utah 2: Bryce Canyon

Monday, June 3

Following our departure from Zion National Park along the Utah 9 road, it was about 2 hours drive to Bryce Canyon National Park. If we had an extra day, it would have been pleasant to spend it in the Dixie National Forest. We drove through the forest and saw a few trailheads that looked worth hiking.

We continued directly to Bryce Canyon. Bryce has its own shuttle available to reach the main tourist attractions, but we found it most convenient to drive and there was plenty of parking available in the afternoon. We stopped in the visitor centre to get a map, then drove to the popular Sunset Point.
Queens Garden Trail

With our limited time, we decided to do the most popular hike - from Sunset Point, we strolled along the canyon rim to Sunrise point, then took the clockwise route down into the canyon via the Queens Garden Trail, and then back up to the rim via the Navajo Loop.
We saw a rattlesnake at the floor of the canyon. Watch where you step!

We followed this up with the drive to each of the scenic lookout points, which we just jumped out the car for 2 minutes each to see. Overall, after being in Zion, Bryce was enjoyable to see but I never felt there was anything too spectacular about it.

We left Bryce for our motel, Bryce Country Cabins, which was about 20 minutes drive away in Tropic. The cabins were clean and quaint, just about all you could expect for a rural tourist accommodations, and I was unable to find much of a better price for alternatives in this location (which was prime for Bryce and the Grand Staircase visitation). There are two places to eat in Tropic, Clarke's or a pizza place. We went to Clarke's across the street from the motel, and the food was exactly what we needed. The portions were so massive that we were able to share one $20 main between the two of us.

Since we had our fair portion of Bryce Canyon in the half day we spent there, we made plans to move on to the Grand Staircase the next day.
